Overview
Architect: Bruner/Cott
When Harvard University revitalized the historic Ray Lavietes Basketball Pavilion—originally built in 1926—they wanted to preserve the intimate, classic game-day atmosphere that makes the venue one of the oldest active basketball facilities in the country. As part of the Pavilion’s larger modernization (completed 2017, LEED Gold), Hussey Seating delivered a seating solution that elevates comfort, branding, and sightlines without sacrificing the building’s character.
Retractable + Fixed Gymnasium Seating Upgrade
The renovation aimed to celebrate the Pavilion’s history while bringing the facility up to modern expectations for Division I athletics—improving spectator amenities, media accommodations, and overall game-day experience. Seating needed to support a premium fan experience, integrate cleanly with the refreshed interiors, and maintain the close-to-the-court energy the venue is known for.
Hussey’s Solution
Hussey installed a hybrid seating approach that balances flexibility with a high-end, permanent feel:
- MAXAM+ telescopic bleachers with classic wood seats to preserve the traditional gymnasium aesthetic while providing retractable versatility for multi-use programming.
- Fixed, padded Fusion™ chairs to deliver a more premium seating experience in key areas.
- End-stanchion logo graphics to reinforce Harvard branding and create a polished, broadcast-ready backdrop.
